Introduction
Hello and welcome to Northern Europe's largest private collection of toys.
This entire collection comes from Tidö Castle in Västerås.
It was Carl David von Schinkel who began collecting toys in the late 1960s. His son, David von Schinkel, then took over the collection and responsibility for the toys. Today, the collection consists of more than 40,000 toys. The oldest toys are almost 800 years old, but the majority of the toys are about 100 years old.
In 2017, the entire collection was moved from Tidö Castle to Bergrummet on Skeppsholmen so that more people could experience the toys. That's where the Stockholm Toy Museum was born!
The Bergrummet that you are now in was built in the 1930s and 1940s by the Swedish Armed Forces and was intended to serve as a command center for Sweden during World War II. After the war, the Bergrummet served as a secret torpedo workshop until the 1970s.
Since 2017, the Stockholm Toy Museum has been housed in the cave, when the museum was designed, with the help of no less than 55 artists and museum educators.
A warm welcome to take part in and experience all the fantastic toys!
