Dolls' accessories
Since dolls are often images of real people and from the beginning had a clear educational purpose, accessories were important. The dolls needed clothes, furniture and other things that we humans use. At the same time, they were also supposed to train the children, almost exclusively girls, to be mothers and to take care of a home. They were able to do this through playing with the dolls and accessories. Today, this can also say something about the time they come from.
The doll in the pink dress in the left corner is from the late 19th century. Her head is made of bisque porcelain and the hand-sewn body is made of real leather. What distinguishes the doll is precisely that it has many accessories. No less than ten well-sewn dresses with beautiful details and lots of accessories, hats, boxes, babydolls, shoehorns, shoes and porcelain. The large brown suitcase in the background also belongs to this doll. Who could have owned this doll? Perhaps it has been traveling with its owner and needed its suitcase with several changes of clothes? Perhaps it has functioned as a copy of its owner or the owner's parent.
Another of the dolls in the display is dressed in traditional Swedish folk costume, even though it is made in Germany. The German doll manufacturers often sewed Swedish folk costumes for the dolls that were exported here.
The linen closet at the bottom left is incredibly well-made and probably homemade. Here, someone has put a lot of time and love into sewing and embroidering monograms on the linen that is in the closet, perhaps a grandmother who wanted to give a nice present to a grandchild. The large wardrobe-like suitcase in the background is a model of a so-called American suitcase that was popular among those who could afford to travel comfortably to America. Or those who could only dream of it. Many of them have probably also been inherited and cared for for several generations.
