Main track
Both a work of art and a toy
Throughout history, toys have been produced in different ways and with different materials, depending on what was popular at the time. Nowadays, you might not think much of an advanced programmed plastic robot, but when it arrived, it probably attracted a lot of attention. When you experienced a completely new function or solution for the first time, it was often a sensation. Many historical toys had incredibly smart solutions for their time, both in terms of technology and design.
Today, some older toys are perceived as offensive. But they also tell a story about the thoughts, ideas and events that influenced people at the time they were made. And maybe there are toys today that will be perceived as offensive in the future?
Even though much today is digital, there is still room for play with movement and physical toys. Many of the toys at the Stockholm Toy Museum encourage movement and play. The question is what will the toy museum of the future look like? What will generations after us feel nostalgic about?
